Get the best broadband for your house share

Josh G | Social Media & Content Lead

Put an end to the drama and restore some much-needed harmony to your house share in one power move. Switching to full fibre broadband.

Living in a house share? These days, squabbles about who finished the oat milk or last took out the bins are the least of your worries… Your Twitch-addicted housemate hogging the bandwidth whilst you’re trying to dial in to a work call is.

Step forward full fibre. It's ridiculously fast, and really, really reliable. So everyone can do their thing online. No passive aggressive post-its required.

Post it note saying "licked your cheese. Sorry"

7 broadband tips for housemate harmony

1. Run a broadband speed test to find out what you’re dealing with

They say knowledge is power. So run a broadband speed test to find out how fast your broadband really is. It’s basically a health-check for your network – and it works best if you try it on different devices at different times of the day.

If things look slow, it might be time for an upgrade – or finding a fairer way to share the broadband around the house (non-stop gamers, we’re looking at you).

2. Learn about upload speeds.

Uploading isn’t just for influencers and gamers. It’s for anyone who shares anything – a presentation on Zoom, files to Google Drive, and even auto-backups to the cloud.

If you’re working from home or juggling creative projects, your upload speed really matters. Try scheduling big uploads outside peak hours. Trust us, your housemates will thank you.

3. Be considerate with your when you take up bandwidth

They say timing’s everything. And that’s definitely true of broadband in a house share.

So when your housemate’s got a job interview, maybe dial back on the gaming and live-streaming. Bandwidth is like hot water, it’s great until it runs out and someone has to take a cold shower…

4. Ditch your old devices which suck up bandwidth in the background

You wouldn’t leave the heating on 24/7, so don’t leave every device you’ve ever owned connected to the Wi-Fi indefinitely.

Having a broadband spring clean helps channel broadband to the devices you actually use – and makes you feel pretty zen too.

5. Make the move to mesh wi-fi and spread the signal far and wide

If your bedroom is basically a Wi-Fi dead zone while the lounge has five bars of blazing speed, you need mesh Wi-Fi.

It spreads your signal evenly throughout the house, eliminating dead spots and awkward Zoom calls from the bathroom (… just us?).  So everyone – no matter where they are – gets their fair share.

6. Plug in with ethernet for strong direct connections

An oldie, but a goodie. If your device needs a really solid connection, plug it in directly with an ethernet cable. Bonus points: you’ll also free up the Wi-Fi for everyone else, cementing your status as ‘Best Housemate Ever’.

Here’s the lowdown on wired vs wireless internet if you want to go deeper.

7. Set up guest networks to keep your devices safe

Your housemate might’ve known Jed for years and trust him inside out… But when he comes to the house, don’t give him the keys to kingdom (otherwise known as access to your main Wi-Fi network).

Pop any visitors on a guest network instead, where you can control their access. They’ll still be able to stream, scroll and post – and when they leave, you can switch it off. Easy.

Keep your bond (and bandwidth) strong

Like with most things in a house share, a little consideration goes a long way. So test your speed, understand what upload means, don’t hog the Wi-Fi and make the most of tech features like mesh and guest networks.

And if you and your housemates fancy a taste of ridiculously fast full fibre to totally eliminate the drama, we can help. See if we’re in your area now.
